Comments Off The Victoria at Seven East Fourteen Street
August 31st, 2010
Posted in Manhattan Sales
When it was built in 1964, 14th Street was in disarray, a mix of declining New York institutions like the S. Klein Department Store, a famous discount emporium, and Luchow's, the famous German restaurant, now both gone, and open storefront clothing and notions shops, and Union Square Park just to the east was a notorious drug haven, and beyond the splendid Con Edison Building at Irving Place, East 14th Street was not glamorous.
The old Academy of Music theater gave way, however, to the spectacular Palladium disco, designed by Arata Isozaki and Klein's was demolished to make way for the huge Zeckendorf Towers project that revitalized the neighborhood and led to a major clean-up of Union Square Park. At the same time, Park Avenue South and the Flatiron District became very chic with trendy restaurants and many important advertising and publishing office tenants and in the 1990's art galleries began to move from SoHo to Chelsea just to the west.
At the nexus of much of New York's most vibrant and youthful energy, this building now has a most enviable location. The Palladium unfortunately was demolished and replaced by a dormitory for New York University but about the same time food stories such as Whole Foods and Trader Joe's opened on East 14th Street and two new residential buildings on Union Square were completed.
The building's 495 apartments were converted to a cooperative in 1986 when the area began to look on the up and up.
This building, which is located at 7 East 14th Street and is called the Victoria, has a two-tone facade and was designed by Philip Birnbaum & Associates. It has a canopied entrance and some terraces, a valet service and it is pet friendly.
Approx. Prices for Apartments at The Victoria, 7 East 14th Street
• 3 Bedrooms from $2,750,000
• 2 Bedrooms from $1,495,000
• 1 Bedroom from $525,000 to $750,000

From East 59th up to 96th Street, the Upper East Side epitomizes elegance and class. Yet it is not only comfort and prestige that attracts both singles and families to this area, it is convenient too. The Upper East Side is not far from New York's best midtown shopping, has excellent private and public schools, and perhaps best of all is a short stroll away from Central Park, the magnificently planned gardens which are the size of Monaco. Shops such as Dylan's Candy Bar, the Windsor Florist, Serendipity and Bloomingdales grace the area, providing a rich retail experience (aside from mention of the famous stretch of shops within easy walking distance).
Among the excellent private adn public schools in the area are: The Convent of the Sacred Heart; The Hewitt School; Manhattan High School for Girls; Dominican Academy; Marymount School; The Spence School; Allen-Stevenson School; The Nightingale-Bamford School; The Browning School; The Buckley School; St. Bernard's School; St. David's School; Regis High School; Birch Wathen Lenox School; Dalton School; Loyola School; Lycée Français de New York; La Scuola d'Italia Guglielmo Marconi; Rudolph Steiner School; Trevor Day School; Ramaz School; Robert Louis Stevenson School (PS183);PS 77 The Lower Lab school; East Side Middle School; Lillie Devereux Blake School (PS6); East Side Middle School (PS158); Senator Robert F. Wagner Middle School (JHS 167); Talent Unlimited High School; Eleanor Roosevelt High School; Hunter College High School; Urban Academy Laboratory High School; Cornell University Medical School; Hunter College; Marymount Manhattan College; Mount Sinai School of Medicine; Rockefeller University; Metropolitan Hospital (NY Medical College).
The Upper East Side's museums - from the grand Metropolitan, through to the spiral Guggenheim, the innovative Whitney, the quietly elegant Neue Gallerie and the vast mansions-turned-museums, such as the Frick and the Cooper-Hewitt, mean this area has the greatest concentration of artistic treasures anywhere on earth. And while the Upper East Side is the number one choice for New York's high society, there are also some more affordable streets close by too. For more temporary stays of residence, the area boasts hotels such as the Carlyle, Hotel Wales, Hotel 57 and Helmsley Carlton House.
Cafe Sabarsky, Aureole, Serefina Fabulous Grill, Orsay and the Park Avenue Cafe number among the many restaurant options for fine dining in the neighborhood. For cocktails and elegant lounge atmosphere, there are many hotel bars, such as The Library, and other hot nightspots like the Terrace Bar and the Metropolitan Museum Rooftop Garden Bar.

The resemblance is clear, from the classic limestone and granite façade to the tiered setbacks on higher floors. The old world construction features solid 16+ inch concrete walls, classic architectural details and unique floor plan layouts. Although the building is historic, it has been fully renovated and updated in keeping with modern city living. 99 John Deco Lofts is a fantastic combination of old and new.
